Here's a wee story in Shawlands for you, full of the Christmas spirit.
You may remember we ran a cover wishing readers a Merry Christmas about four months back, in August. The reason for the odd but eye-catching cover was that Glasgow City Council had confirmed that Shawlands would get it's own Christmas lights this year.
Some of you may have noticed that there aren't any up yet. Don't worry, by the start of next week Shawlands will be lit up with the spirit of Christmas.
The council have already dropped off a tree outside The Granary on Kilmarnock Road. The real pine tree isn't currently decorated but the council plan to send someone out to do so over this weekend. Click here to have a look!
There are also three trees in front of Langside Halls on Langside Avenue which have been fitted with red fairy lights that will be working by next week according to the council. The council are also trying to put a projector on top of The Corona pub on Kilmarnock road, which will play Christmassy images on the blank wall of The Shed beside it.
Andrew Montgomery, Secretary of the Shawlands and Strathbungo Community Council, spoke with G41 earlier today about the news that, at long last, the area will be decorated for Christmas: "We are grateful to the council for the speed at which they reacted to the proposal for lights in Shawlands. We expected it to be a long process, whereas the council have met it very easily.
"We want to thank the council for this and hopefully over the next couple of years it will build progressively into a more comprehensive display," Andrew said, "And lets hope the tree survives!" he added.
Keep on the lookout for the lights and send me your thoughts and opinions on this or anything else in your area.
Cheers,
Mike.
