G41 on the airwaves!

Just out of interest, what do you think of our new podcasts? Worth doing? Interesting? Too boring? What about the style? All comments and criticisms welcome - as well as any praise of course! I'd be really interested in hearing any suggestions people might have for future podcasts. We're hoping to have video podcasts as well soon.

David Eyre's Blog

I'm the editor of the G41 community newspaper, the moderator of the G41 community website and the managing director of the Southside Media social enterprise. You can find out more about my career in journalism on my own website davideyre.co.uk.

Glasgow accents

I was interested in this comment in the g41 forum:

http://www.southsidemedia.org/g41/node/2154

I did a couple of months of dialectology at uni and it was really interesting. I got to find out the proper name for that wierd kind of post-vowel 'r' sound that some middle class folk in Glasgow make - it's a 'retroflex r' apparently.
Anyroad, I thought the attached file might be interesting to folk - it seems that Glasgow is beginning to lose the 'r' sound altogether after vowels and the 'ch' sound in 'loch'. I blame the telly : )

Now Chick is going Ape

BBC Scotland football reporter Chick Young has become the latest person to object to the planned Go Ape development in Pollok Park. You can read his letter to The Herald here.

Leslie Street

Glasgow City Council planning officers have come out against plans to build on sites in Leslie Street, Pollokshields.

You can read their report in full by clicking on the attachment below. The council's planning committee is considering the application today.

St Albert's Primary

The BBC is reporting today about the latest official inspection of St Albert's Primary School. Click here for more details.

We should be clear - the report isn't critical of staff and pupils at the school - but it is very critical of the former headteacher Frances Diver who stepped down in the summer. You can read the HMI report here.

Shawlands Arcade firm getting flogged off

More news about the future of Shawlands Arcade. The firm that owns the shopping centre is about to be sold off by its parent company. Click here to read more from the Sunday Herald.

Shawlands needs a Nite Zone

The West End has got extra money to help keep the streets safer at weekend nights. Why not Shawlands?

G41 - and now G42 too!

The September edition of G41 is being distributed today. You might notice a couple of changes.

Spam attack

Thanks very much to AndrewM for alerting us to the fact that spambots had put links to inappropriate content on g41.org.uk. They've been deleted now, but unfortunately this is an increasing problem. As a result, I've disabled the ability for people to post anonymous comments on the site for the moment. Get registered to get involved!

Wanted - citizen journalists

When we first started publishing the G41 Newspaper, our website was pretty dull. It basically gave people our contact details and showed them a few of the stories that had been published in that month's paper. But g41.org.uk is a bit different - anyone can use it to make the news.

A new look!

We've given the G41 Community Website a new look. The yellow colour is more like the G41 logo that we have on the G41 Community Newspaper. What do you think?

Bellahouston Park Garden Centre?

The next edition of G41 is out on Friday 20 July. When you get your copy, have a look at page 6. There's a small story in there that I think might become a big issue in the months to come. Let me tell you why.

Yours truly in a podcast - made by someone else!

Want to know a bit more about what Southside Media is all about? Why not have a listen to this podcast that was made by Kibble - a really impressive social enterprise based in Paisley.

Glasgow's 'core paths' network

The city council is asking people to comment on its Core Paths Plan. Just click the link to be taken to the council website and tell them what you think.

Free money for the community!

I thought people might be interested in these two new community cash grant schemes. I was really interested by the research done for o2, that found that 46 per cent of people feel the increased use of community websites and blogging can help stimulate local action. I hope that's true!

Community spaces

It's been a busy few weeks in G41, what with the Pollokshields Strawberry Sunday, Bungo in the Lanes, the Hidden Gardens 4th Birthday and the Proud of Pollokshields Clean Up.

I love these events. I love the fact that dozens of local people from different backgrounds get together to organise them - not to make money, but to give their neighbours a place to meet each other and do something that's for the benefit of the community. We're really lucky to have so many local people who are prepared to spend time and effort to bring these events together.

Hitting a century every day...

When we launched the G41 community website in June 2006, it attracted an average of 15 unique visitors a day. In May, we've been getting an average of 105 daily users!

Getting ready for the next edition

We're working hard on the next edition of the G41 newspaper, which will hit the shops on Friday 18 May. If you've got a story you think we should be covering, please drop me a line at david@southsidemedia.org.

Local council elections

G41 helped organise two Question Time meetings for the local council elections - one in Pollokshields and one in Langside.

You can read what Andrew M thought about the Langside meeting here.
I agree that the turnout was disappointing and that the majority of people there were members of political parties.
