Just out of interest, what do you think of our new podcasts? Worth doing? Interesting? Too boring? What about the style? All comments and criticisms welcome - as well as any praise of course! I'd be really interested in hearing any suggestions people might have for future podcasts. We're hoping to have video podcasts as well soon.

Students at the Pollokshields East Kumon study centre completed hundreds of sums and as part of a national Mathathon and raised £200 for charity. The Mathathon took place on the 30th May, with local children completing as many easy sums as they could in ten minutes. This fun event was one of many activities organised by Kumon to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Children at Kumon study centres throughout the UK and Ireland took part in the Mathathon which where held across the country.
A forest of remembrance in Scotland
By 2006 some 35,000 native trees have been planted on the Holy Island off the west coast of Scotland. Many of these have been dedicated to or planted in memory of a loved one.
Bouquets of flowers will fade and die. The trees will be a living tribute
A Glasgow group has called a vigil to commemorate Moira Jones, the murdered woman found in Queen's Park on 29 May. The vigil, which will take place in George Square at 6pm this Friday, 13 June, will also remember Eleni Pachou, murdered in the city's West End, and other women killed in Glasgow this year.
I am half way through a week in G41, staying with my daughter and visiting my son- both G41 residents. It has been a sunny week and pleasant enough to sit outside. I have been cutting grass and hedges, fitting window locks, clearing up gardens and doing a multitude of other minor jobs. Why dont other residents cut the grass and hedges?

As a resident in Shawlands for nearly 20 years, I can't help notice how the increased amount of fast food shops have had a poor effect on the neighbourhood. Between Moss-Side Road and Langside Avenue, there are four fast food shops, 3 pubs, 1 restaurant, 1 snooker club and 1 cafe. The fast food shops are open until 3 am, but most remain open until business dries up. Their customers ruin the sleep of the residents in the area, and then their's the subject of all the rubbish on our streets in the morning!
Police have arrested a 39 year old man in connection with the the death of a 29 year old man and the alleged assault of a 42 year old man in G41.
The new issue of G41 is out this week, with an update on how things are progressing on the campaign for a town centre plan for Shawlands.
I was interested in this comment in the g41 forum:
I did a couple of months of dialectology at uni and it was really interesting. I got to find out the proper name for that wierd kind of post-vowel 'r' sound that some middle class folk in Glasgow make - it's a 'retroflex r' apparently.
Anyroad, I thought the attached file might be interesting to folk - it seems that Glasgow is beginning to lose the 'r' sound altogether after vowels and the 'ch' sound in 'loch'. I blame the telly : )
Pollok Park user Bob Downie, writing in The Herald today regarding the proposed Go Ape adventure course, has learned that "only a single planning notice was placed on a lamp-post outside the park on November 9, 2007". The planning department is unable to say how long the single notice was in position.
Dear All,
As you will be aware the “Save Our Parks” campaign has been running since last year in the East Pollokshields ward where planning applications were lodged for development on Turtle Park (Forth Street/Leslie Street) and Stepping Stones Park (Keir Street/Leslie Street).
The Leslie Street Greenspaces Group considers these parks valuable greenspaces which should not be built on. Our primary aim is to stop any building, and our secondary aim is to see the spaces improved through a well planned and executed community project.
BBC Scotland football reporter Chick Young has become the latest person to object to the planned Go Ape development in Pollok Park. You can read his letter to The Herald here.
Glasgow City Council planning officers have come out against plans to build on sites in Leslie Street, Pollokshields.
Just heard that the Court issued the decision on 24th December and that the appeal against the Committee decision to refuse an HMO licence renewal for the Parkview Hotel was refused. I don't think the war is won but it is another victory against anti-social behaviour in the Queens Park area.
As I understand it McKever can appeal to the Court of Session but he has until late February to do that so don't hold your breath. The Parkview remains open whilst there is any live appeal.
To All The Residents Of Pollokshields!!!!!!
Just a short message to wish you all and your families a very enjoyable and relaxing festive holidays and best wishes for 2008!!!!!!!
Could we, Leslie Street Greenspaces Group, thank all of you who have helped with the Save Our Parks Campaign, letter writing to the council and any other assistance you may have provided, it has been very appreciated and hope it will be rewarded when the application (Stepping Stones Park - Keir Street/Leslie Street) is presented at the Planning Committee in early January 2008.
Here's maybe not the cheeriest mini documentary you'll ever see, but it's a really interesting look at problems with teenage gangs in Glasgow and features an interview with Pollok.
